As an important piece of criminal justice reform legislation, this bill would have slightly redefined in two ways the definitions of “felony” and “misdemeanor” in Rhode Island law.

We supported this bill which would have prevented landlords from inquiring about the immigration status of their tenants or potential tenants, noting that this legislation is critical for ensuring that families with undocumented members can maintain housing without fear.

We supported legislation which would have barred private prisons from operating in the state of Rhode Island entirely and limited the ability for carceral facilities in Rhode Island to cooperate with ICE.

This legislation would have importantly ensured that all residents under the age of 19 – regardless of immigration status – would qualify for comprehensive health care through the state’s RIte Track program.

This legislation would have positively provided state-level protection to undocumented individuals in locations where they should feel safe.
