Hotel Ejection of Guests (H 7065, S 2271)

In 2022, the legislature passed legislation which allows hotels to eject patrons who use “verbally abusive language," and, at the time, we raised concerns about the broad wording of this power and the dangers of it being discriminatorily enforced.

Self-Storage Notification Requirements (H 7238, S 2450)

Proving that no civil liberties victory is left unpunished, a bill which the ACLU successfully obtained amendments to in the 2023 session resurfaced again.

We urged amendment to this bill which authorizes courts to issue restrictive filing orders to protect victims of domestic violence from abusive litigation.

Self-Storage Facility Default Notices (H 5433, S 366)

We opposed this bill that would have authorized the sale of a delinquent renter’s property in a self-service unit without appropriate advance notification that we believe basic principles of due process would dictate.

Barring Felons from Owning Firearms (S 744)

In accordance with the ACLU of RI’s longstanding opposition to laws that disqualify former felons from a wide array of rights, benefits, and privileges, we opposed this broad legislation which would have made it a crime under state law for any ex-felon to possess a firearm.

Statute of Limitations Removal for Child Abuse (H 5510, S 817)

Though we appreciated the intentions behind this legislation, which would have eliminated the statute of limitations for filing civil suits alleging sexual abuse, we opposed the bill.

Post-Conviction Relief Statute of Limitations (H 5905)

We strongly opposed this legislation which would have established a one-year statute of limitations for the filing of post-conviction relief petitions.

Advance Practice Registered Nurses (H 5819A as amended, S 723A as amended)

Opposed by the ACLU, this legislation would allow Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) to attest to a patient’s mental health condition and participate in certifying patients for mandated outpatient treatment, an action which is presently something that only doctors can do.

Tax Return Statute of Limitations (H 7774)

We opposed a bill which would completely remove the statute of limitations that currently exists for alleged tax deficiencies, and allow tax officials to charge individuals with filing incomplete tax returns decades after the fact.
