Legislation supported by the ACLU would allow for certain terminally ill patients to make knowing and competent decisions about death and peacefully determine the end of their lives with dignity, autonomy, and privacy.

By granting legal immunity to individuals engaged in commercial sexual activity who report a crime that they are either a victim of or witness to, this legislation would have created more comprehensive occupational safety for sex workers.

We strongly supported a proposed change to the state’s Fair Employment Practices Act which would expand the definition of “employee” to cover a wider breadth of working personnel, including domestic workers, volunteers, interns, and contracted employees.

As one of only two states without a process for the certification and de-certification of law enforcement officers, we strongly supported this legislation which would have instituted such oversight over these public-facing personnel.

Though encouraging voter registration is an important and laudable cause, we were constrained to oppose this legislation which would have changed the current opt-in process for registering to vote at the DMV to an opt-out method.

In 2022, the legislature passed legislation which allows hotels to eject patrons who use “verbally abusive language," and, at the time, we raised concerns about the broad wording of this power and the dangers of it being discriminatorily enforced.

Proving that no civil liberties victory is left unpunished, a bill which the ACLU successfully obtained amendments to in the 2023 session resurfaced again.

We voiced concerns about a bill which would allow for municipalities to substitute newspaper notifications for important electoral issues with a post on the municipality’s website.
