Under state law, municipalities can charge no more than $500 for violations of municipal ordinances that do not rise to the level of criminal offenses. Under this legislation, that number could have doubled.

We joined a number of organizations in supporting legislation which would have limite the ability for carceral facilities in RI to utilize solitary confinement, noting that best practices point towards eliminating solitary confinement as a way to keep prisons safer, healthier, and reduce recidivism.

The ACLU of Rhode Island supports this bill, which would helpfully amend the law enacted in 2021 designed to allow immigrant students to qualify for resident tuition at the state’s public universities, colleges, and community colleges.

We strongly support this bill which would have appropriately allocated $2,000,000 for the hiring of school social workers.
