Building upon the important work of the Reproductive Privacy Act, the Equality in Abortion Act would have ensured that abortion care is covered by Medicaid and within the health insurance plans of state employees.

Anti-Abortion Rights Legislation

The importance of the passage of the Reproductive Privacy Act in 2019 – and continued advocacy around abortion rights – is especially clear in light of the slew of anti-choice bills which were introduced during this session.

Prohibition on Teaching “Divisive Concepts” (H 6070)

Noting that this bill was not only an assault on free speech but that it would inappropriately quash important teaching and conversation around such issues as institutional racism or sexism, we opposed legislation which sought to ban the teaching of “divisive topics” in public schools.

Legal Immunity for Sex Workers (H 5467)

By granting legal immunity to individuals engaged in commercial sexual activity who report a crime that they are either a victim of or witness to, this legislation would create more comprehensive occupational safety for sex workers.

Equal Pay (H 5261 A, S 270 A)

Domestic Worker Minimum Wage (H 5263, S 323)

Rhode Island’s current minimum wage law contains an exemption for “domestic service” workers, a group of employees comprised largely of women, BIPOC individuals, and immigrants; we supported a piece of legislation which would include such workers under the minimum wage requirements.

Use of Campaign Funds for Childcare (H 5289, S 60)

The Federal Election Commission has previously concluded that childcare, if the need for childcare arises as a result of campaign activities, can additionally be a permissible usage of campaign funding; this legislation would formally codify this decision into RI law.

Menstrual Hygiene Product Access (H 5083, S 86, S 251, S 152)
