2026 marks 250 years since the founding of the United States—and 67 years of the ACLU of Rhode Island working to protect and defend civil liberties in our state.

Across generations, the circumstances have changed, but many of the fundamental struggles over freedom, equality, and government power have endured. Rights once fought for can face new challenges. Questions thought settled can return in different forms. And each generation has a role in protecting the freedoms secured by those who came before while continuing the work of extending those freedoms to all.

Our theme this year — Then. Now. Our Work Continues. — reflects the cyclical nature of civil liberties work: looking back at where we’ve been, recognizing how those struggles continue to shape the present, and understanding that the work of protecting our rights and liberties is never finished.

We invite you to join us for the 2026 ACLU Foundation of Rhode Island Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 12, 2026, at The Guild in Pawtucket (461 Main St., Pawtucket). Connect with fellow advocates, community members, cooperating attorneys, and supporters as we reflect on the past year, recognize those who have helped defend civil liberties in Rhode Island, and look toward the work ahead.

This year’s program will feature:

• The presentation of the Raymond J. Pettine Civil Libertarian of the Year Award to longtime friend, supporter, and cooperating attorney Lise Iwon, recognizing her years of dedication to protecting civil liberties and advancing justice in Rhode Island.
• A photography exhibit by James Hazelwood, offering a visual perspective on civil liberties, community, and the work of the ACLU of Rhode Island.
• Food, conversation, and community, with time to connect with the people who support, strengthen, and make this work possible.
