The Rhode Island ACLU today filed a lawsuit on behalf of a mother who has been barred from volunteering at her child’s elementary school because she has a past criminal history of drug addiction. This is so despite the fact that the mother’s drug problems predate her child’s birth and she has been involved since then in promoting drug abuse prevention.

The Rhode Island ACLU has today filed suit in federal court to contest the Division of Motor Vehicles’ actions in advising thousands of motorists that their license and registration will be suspended due to alleged unpaid fines that may go back decades. The lawsuit the notices sent out by the DMV “facially unconstitutional,” pointing out that they give the recipients no information about the nature of the alleged offense leading to the suspension, about the penalty for the offense, or even the date that the offense purportedly took place.

The Rhode Island ACLU has today filed suit against the City of Pawtucket, charging city officials with blatantly violating a state law that restricts random drug testing in the workplace.

In an effort to address a major human rights and civil liberties concern, legislation on behalf of the Affiliate, RI State Nurses Association and RI NOW was introduced to prohibit shackling or otherwise restraining incarcerated pregnant women during labor, delivery and post-recovery.
