LETTER Re: Narragansett Housing Ordinances

This letter was sent to Narragansett Town Council urging them to take action to repeal town ordinances that are inconsistent with recent amendments to the state’s zoning laws, in particular a municipality’s ability to limit the maximum number of unrelated persons who can live together in a dwelling.

Unrelated Housemate Limitations (H 7382, S 2635)

Current law allows municipalities to limit the maximum number of unrelated persons who can live together in a dwelling, but of no less than three people. We supported this bill which would increase the limit to five.

ACLU Seeks Dismissal of Charges Under New Narragansett Student Housing Ordinance

The ACLU of Rhode Island has filed a brief today in Narragansett Municipal Court seeking dismissal of the charges against twelve people and businesses for violating a Town ordinance barring more than four unrelated people from living together. The brief, filed by ACLU of RI volunteer attorney H. Jefferson Melish, argues that the housing restriction, aimed at unruly URI students, is unconstitutional.
