LETTER Re: Cranston Mayor's Proposed Anti-Homelessness Ordinance

This letter was sent to the Cranston City Council after the Mayor proposed yet another punitive anti-homelessness ordinance that would allow the police and Department of Public Works to destroy personal property with only 24 hours' notice.

This letter was signed by: Rhode Island Homeless Advocacy Project, Better Lives Rhode Island, House of Hope CDC, American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island, and Street Sights.

ACLU Again Sues Cranston Over Anti-Panhandling Ordinance

The ACLU of Rhode Island today sued the City of Cranston over its latest anti-panhandling ordinance.  The suit, filed in federal court by ACLU of RI volunteer attorney Lynette Labinger, argues that the ordinance, enacted earlier this year by a 5-4 vote of the City Council, violates the First Amendment right of individuals to solicit donations and distribute literature on Cranston roadways.
