voting rights

We supported this proposed constitutional amendment which would remove the state Constitution’s onerous requirement that bars individuals from voting in an election, except for President, unless they have registered to vote at least 30 days in advance, one of the longest time periods in the country.

We supported this proposed constitutional amendment which would have removed the state Constitution’s onerous requirement that bars individuals from voting in an election, except for President, unless they have registered to vote at least 30 days in advance, one of the longest time periods in the country. Allowing qualified individuals to register to vote closer to an election would provide the public a better opportunity to participate in the franchise, and this amendment would have more appropriately given the General Assembly the ability to establish a shorter time frame for residents to register to vote. Unfortunately the bills died in committee.
