After the quiet expiration of the CCPRA in 2020, a statute which mandated the collection of traffic stop and search data from every law enforcement agency in Rhode Island, we are supporting legislation that would both renew the data collection provisions and annual report requirements and impose more stringent requirements on the collection and analysis of the data. The bill would, in addition to requiring the Department of Transportation to create a more publicly accessible platform for the viewing of the data, create a community oversight board to better promote police accountability for racial disparities in any traffic stop and search data.
