After the quiet expiration of the CCPRA, a statute which mandated the collection of traffic stop and search data from every law enforcement agency in Rhode Island, we supported legislation that would have both renewed the data collection provisions and annual report requirements and imposed more stringent requirements on the collection and analysis of the data. The bill would have, in addition to requiring the Department of Transportation to create a more publicly accessible platform for the viewing of the data, created a community oversight board to better promote police accountability for racial disparities in any traffic stop and search data. Unfortunately, the bill died in committee in both the House and the Senate.
