We supported legislation which, since passed, now provides a critical protection against housing discrimination based on a potential tenant’s source of income, an issue which particularly impacts marginalized communities. Before passage of this legislation, landlords could deny housing applications simply because the applicant uses income originating from areas such as Social Security, child support payments, or Section 8 vouchers. This legislation rightfully prohibits this harmful practice and ensures that no tenant is denied housing due to the origin or their rent money. Positively, this bill passed and was signed by the Governor in April.
