Though we strongly supported the goal of ensuring more eligible voters are added to the voter rolls, we opposed this legislation which would have allowed the DMV to make determinations about a person’s citizenship for purposes of sending their information to the Board of Canvassers to automatically register them to vote. We expressed concerns that such a process could lead to fraught encounters with immigrants, and could lead to the registration of individuals -- including some who might not be eligible to vote -- without their knowledge or consent. This legislation died in committe in both the House and the Senate.
