Nationwide, women have historically been charged more for the same health insurance than men, solely because of their gender, leaving women less able to purchase vital health care coverage. This practice is generally illegal under the Affordable Care Act, but both the composition of the Supreme Court and the legal challenges to the ACA recently heard by the Supreme Court could impact the validity of the ACA in the future. This legislation will codify this important prohibition into Rhode Island law and permanently ensure health and gender equity for Rhode Islanders. This bill passed during the 2021 session.
