We supported this bill which would have prevented landlords from inquiring about the immigration status of their tenants or potential tenants, noting that this legislation was critical for ensuring that families with undocumented members could maintain housing without fear. This bill would have also confronted issues of racial profiling by restricting the ability for a landlord to stereotype and inquire after a tenant or potential tenant’s immigration status, and would have prevented landlords from inappropriately leveraging information about immigration status against their tenants to restrict them from reporting violations or making complaints about conditions at the residence. This bill unfortunately died in committee in both the House and the Senate.
