Justice-involved individuals are much more likely to report opioid use, and drug overdoses are one of the leading causes of death for individuals who are released from correctional institutions. We supported legislation which would have formally codified an ongoing program in our state Department of Corrections which provides medicated assisted treatment for individuals who are incarcerated, noting the positive impact that these programs can have on the health of an incarcerated individual following their sentence. Unfortunately, the bill died in the House after passing the Senate.
