The following sample letter is to help you in crafting your own public records request. Remember that as long as your request clearly states what records you are seeking and where they should be sent, you have satisfied the requirements of the law.

I am seeking records under the Access to Public Records Act, R.I.G.L. 38-2. If you are not the appropriate individual to handle this request, please forward this letter to the appropriate records designee or let me know if I should address this request to another body.

  • Specific description of Document A, including the time frame in which you believe this document exists;
  • Specific description of Document B, including the time frame in which you believe this document exists.
