Let People Vote. The landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965 turned 50 last week, but efforts to suppress voting rights continue today across the country and in Rhode Island. We joined the NAACP-Providence Branch, the Rhode Island Disability Law Center, and the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless to discuss the state of voting rights in Rhode Island and across the country and how measures such as voter ID laws, prison gerrymandering, and felon disenfranchisement limits or diminishes voting rights.

A Victory the Court. On Tuesday, a Superior Court judge rejected a motion to dismiss our lawsuit alleging discrimination against a medical marijuana patient. The suit is on behalf of a URI graduate student who was denied a paid internship because she is a medical marijuana cardholder. Check back in with us as this case moves forward.

Continuing the Investigation.  The ACLU continued to urge the Cranston City Council to hold further investigations into the city Police Department after the State Police’s report revealed misconduct and abuses of power inside the department. The ACLU, speaking before the City Council, said the public deserves to know how extensive this pattern of police misconduct may have been. The City Council is considering its own investigation, according to the Providence Journal.
