Criminal Justice
The Rhode Island ACLU worksto make the promise of fair treatment a reality for all people. All too often, the rights of those involved in the criminal justice system are compromised or ignored. The Bill of Rights covers all Americans, including suspects, defendants, offenders and prisoners.
Court Cases
Currently in the courts is Cook v. Wall, a federal lawsuit alleging that correctional officials have engaged in a pattern of unconstitutional harassment against inmate Jason Cook after he publicly criticized Department of Corrections’ mail policies and sought legal assistance from the ACLU.

Legislation
In the 2010 session, the Affiliate is working to pass two proactive bills, one that would prohibit shackling or otherwise restraining incarcerated pregnant women during labor, delivery and post-recovery, and another that would decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.
In 2009, several bills relating to criminal justice issues were up for discussion, including ones dealing with mandatory sentencing, prostitution, human trafficking, sex offenders, costs for BCI checks and protection from self-incrimination.
In 2008, the legislature addressed the issue of overcrowding at the Rhode Island Training School, and the ACLU fought against mandatory sentencing and worked to protect the civil rights of all, including those of sex offenders.
