Membership Spotlight
Meg
I grew up hearing stories about racial discrimination from my father, who spent his childhood in the segregated South. Hearing these stories shaped me from an early age. I remember my dad telling me stories about witnessing the inherent inequalities in “separate but equal,” even down to the unequal quality of the separate drinking fountains in town. It occurred to me that although many years had passed since de jure segregation, I still witnessed inequality around me. In addition to being witness to racial discrimination, I became more aware that gay and lesbian couples were not afforded the same rights as straight couples and was troubled by this inequality.
I encourage people to become a card carrying member of the ACLU because members are the strength behind the work of the organization. In addition to receiving newsletters and advanced notice of events, it’s exciting to be a part of a historic organization that is on the front lines of defending our Constitutional freedoms every single day.
